Every month we ask a Love Sewing reader to take one of our free patterns for a spin, so that you can be inspired by a sewist like you. Issue 113 of Love Sewing features Vogue 9202 and we asked Sam Sahota to put it to the test.

This pattern is included in your print edition, which you can find in shops all over the UK or order online from our friends at CraftStash.

I was delighted to review this pattern as it has an empire waist, which I love. It’s such a flattering shape, and I love that this is a curved empire – even better! I also love that there are so many options available with this pattern, making it so versatile. A winner all around!

I made view D as I was immediately drawn to this classic silhouette on the pattern envelope. I cut a size 10 with the B cup for the bust, grading to size 12 at the waist and size 10 at the hips. Because of the princess seaming, the bodice is close fitting, and the skirt is perfect. I only had to make two fitting modifications. Firstly, I shortened the bodice by 1cm (which I have to do with most patterns) and added 2” to the length of the skirt. I fully lined the dress as recommended in the pattern. I contemplated adding sleeves but decided against it in the end. I can always wear a short cardigan in the cooler months!

This beautiful floral cotton sateen fabric had been in my stash for quite some time, and I knew it would be perfect for this pattern. Unfortunately, I bought so long ago that I can’t remember where I got it. It took me a while to cut out the pattern pieces as I was trying to pattern match the flowers. I gave up in the end as I was finding it impossible! I opted to place the rose in the middle of the bodice, and I love how that turned out.

I would recommend to others to make this dress. I feel fabulous wearing my dress – partly because it’s a great fit. I have already worn it to work and received many compliments. I will definitely be making the flared skirt option in the future!
