Everyone loves a shaker card; they are fun to make and are guaranteed to put a smile on the recipient's face! By creating your own background using coloured inks you can produce wonderfully unique designs.

Start off by cutting your card to the correct size, smooth card will work best for this but you could experiment with different types of card for a variety of effects. Next choose your ink colours and start to apply the ink to the card. There are many ways to do this; the quickest and easiest method is to use blending brushes or an ink-blending tool with removable sponge applicators or pads, which is preferable if you wish to apply several colours as you can use a different applicator for each colour. For a more blended finish place the cardstock onto a craft mat, rub the applicator onto the craft mat first and work in a circular motion towards the cardstock.

It’s easy to create many different patterns and my card designs show a few ways this look can be achieved. You will notice that you will not need lots of different colours of ink as when they are blended or overlapped they produce a vast array of colours and shades. The possibilities are endless!

Once you have created your inked background, allow plenty of time for the ink to dry, this can be speeded up with a heat tool. Then you can go on to choosing dies for the shaker aperture. It’s a good idea to cut the die from scrap cardstock first to see how the aperture will look. After you have cut out your aperture, attach acetate to the reverse to cover the opening, add 3D foam pads or tape around the edge of the aperture ensuring there are no gaps then sprinkle sequins inside. Place cardstock on top of the 3D foam tape to hold the sequins in place, it’s best to use white cardstock or plain coloured cardstock to complement your design and not distract from the fabulous inked background.

1

Brush Faded Jeans ink over a curved edge. Remove the curved cardstock and replace with another piece 2cm down from the first. Brush using Mermaid Lagoon ink

2

Continue to cover the cardstock in the same way using Squeezed Lemonade, Spiced Marmalade and Picked Raspberry ink followed by Faded Jeans and Mermaid Lagoon ink

3

Layer the inked panel onto a slightly larger piece of white cardstock. Die-cut three clouds from the inked panel to create apertures as shown

4

Use Versamark ink to stamp the sentiment 1.5cm from the bottom-right corner of the inked panel and heat-embossing in white

5

Turn the panel over and attach a 12x15cm piece of acetate to cover the openings. Attach 3D foam pads around each of the apertures as shown

6

Remove the backing from the 3D foam pads and sprinkle a mix of gems and sequins into each of the openings. Place a 12x15cm piece of white cardstock on top and press firmly to secure
