Hinged die-cuts tutorial
Master partial die-cutting techniques to create fun hinged die-cuts with Kim Dellow’s easy step-by-step guide!
The partial die-cutting technique is such an inventive way to get the most out of your dies. It is great for adding decorative edges to cardstock, but have you tried it to make dimensional die-cut sentiments and focal points that pop out of the card front? By using partial die-cutting you keep part of the die-cut still attached to the cardstock and then fold it out at the attached part, or hinge, so that it sticks out of the card.
Don’t worry, it is a lot easier than it sounds! All you need to do is consider which parts of the die you would like to stay attached to the card and which parts you can have sticking out from the card and then set up your die-cutting sandwich so that it cannot cut the areas you want to use as the hinge.
You do have to keep in mind the size of your manual cutting machine and design your hinged die-cuts so that they will easily fit into the sandwich that you run through your machine. Apart from that, the partial die-cutting world is your oyster and you can make hinged die-cuts from a whole range of different styles and types of dies!
Try it out on something easy first, such as basic shapes, before branching out into more complex intricate dies, sentiments and alphabet dies. But once you have the hang of it, you will be adding hinges and secret pop-outs into all your card creations!
This first project shows you how to create hinged letter die-cut sentiments.
Mark off 2-3cm on each side of the panel to be die-cut, align the ruler to those marks then line up the first letter on the ruler and secure with Washi tape
Add the panel to your usual die-cutting sandwich for the die but place the top plate partly over the letter so that the left-hand edge of the letter won’t be cut. Die-cut the panel
Remove the letter die, replace the ruler and line up the next letter in the word, secure with Washi tape and partial die-cut as Step 2. Repeat until the word is die-cut and erase the pencil marks
