You’ll need:
- Polyester fleece fabric in pink – 153/4 x 113/4in (40 x 30cm)
- Felt fabric in black – 12in (30.5cm) square
- Polar fleece fabric in white – 153/4in (40cm) square
- Faux fur fabric in grass green – 235/8 x 73/4in (60 x 20cm)
- Soft-toy filling
- Sewing thread in white, black and green
- Sewing machine with ballpoint 90/14 stretch needle
- Sewing needle
- Pins
- Fabric scissors
- Using the Watermelon Flesh template, pin and cut out two from the pink fleece fabric. Using the Watermelon Pips template, pin and cut out 10 from the black felt fabric. Pin five of the pips on the fluffy side of one of the pink flesh pieces so that they are spaced out evenly and away from the edges. Repeat with the remaining pips on the other piece of fabric.
- With the sewing machine set on a short and narrow appliqué stitch and using black thread, very carefully and slowly, without stretching the fleece fabric, sew all the way around the outer edge of each black pip, remembering to backstitch. Neaten off any stray threads to the reverse of the piece and trim. Repeat with the other piece of fabric.
3 Fold the white polar fleece fabric in half. Using the Watermelon Outer Ring template, pin and cut out, to give you two pieces. Take one of the pieces, lay it flat on the table right side up and position one of the pink flesh pieces so that it sits in the centre with the straight edges aligned. Pin all the way around to secure.
4 Using the same appliqué stitch (see Step 2) and white thread, carefully sew around the outer curved edge of the pink flesh, remembering not to pull and stretch the fabric as you sew. Once you reach the straight edge, change the stitch setting to a running stitch and sew along that edge. Backstitch when you reach the end and trim any stray threads. Repeat with the other piece of fabric.
5 Place the watermelon pieces right sides together and pin along the straight edges. With the sewing machine set on a longer running stitch setting, sew along the straight edge with a 1/2in (1.5cm) seam allowance, remembering to backstitch either end.
6 Using the Watermelon Skin template, pin and cut one piece from the green faux fur fabric. Pin one side of the skin to one side of the flesh, right sides together, starting at the seam.
7 With the sewing machine set on the longer stitch setting and green thread, sew a running stitch along the pinned edge with a 1/2in (1.5cm) seam allowance and backstitcheither end.
8 Pin the other side of the skin to the remaining watermelon edge then, using the same stitch setting, sew a running stitch with a 1/2in (1.5cm) seam allowance for about 9 3/4in (25cm) then stop and backstitch. Leave a gap of about 2 1/4in (6cm) and continue sewing in running stitch until you reach the end, remembering to backstitch either end. Trim and neaten off any stray threads.
9 Turn the watermelon the right way out through the gap then run your fingers along the inside seams to create a crisp edge. Fill with plenty of toy stuffing, paying particular attention to the corners.
10 Using an invisible stitch, close the gap. Fasten off and trim any stray threads.
