Stitch Masterclass: Basketweave Stitch

If you're looking for a stitch that is dense and textured then basketweave is a good one to try. The density of the yarn means it is particularly useful for the creation of bags, cushions and rugs.

Without a doubt, it is a fun stitch to make and once you get going with it relatively easy to make as well.

The basics

One of the noticeable things about this stitch is it looks as if it is worked horizontally and vertically; however, this is not the case. The rows which appear to be horizontal are in fact simply the top of the treble row beneath. It is this that gives the basketweave texture.

It is worked in the front and back posts of the previous row and to keep the shape you only chain up 2 at the start of each row, rather than the expected chain 3.

To start with chain in multiples of 6 plus 5. Add 2 extra stitches to the end when you have the right length.

Let's have a go

Remember

If you're looking for a stitch that is dense and textured then basketweave is a good one to try. this density of the yarn means it is particularly useful for the creation of bags, cushions and rugs.

Step 1:

Treble row

1 treble in 4th chain from the hook, then put 1 treble in every chain until the end of the row. Turn.

Step 2:

Front Post Treble

Chain 2. In the next 3 stitches (ignoring the first treble) make 3 front post trebles. This stitch is made by yarning over and placing your hook around the post of the stitch below. This is done from the front, inserting the hook from right to left.

Step 3:

Back Post Treble

In the next 3 stitches, you will work into the back post of the stitch below. Yarn over and insert your hook through the post of the stitch below, but this time through the back of the stitch, again from right to left.

Step 4:

Continue to the end of the row

Repeat steps 2 and 3 to the end of the row so you have alternate rows of Front Post Trebles and Back Post Trebles. In the last stitch make 1 treble. Turn

Step 5:

New row

Chain 2 to get to the right level. Miss first treble and Back Post Treble in next 3 Front Post Trebles in the row below. Front Post Treble in next 3 Back Post Trebles in row below. Repeat to end of row. 1 treble in last stitch.

Step 6:

Next row

Chain 2. Miss first treble, Back Post Treble around the next 3 Back Post Trebles in the row below. Front Post Treble around the next 3 Front Post Trebles in the row below. Repeat from Step 2.
