Shimmer and Shine Tutorial

The Nuvo Shimmer Powder and Nuvo Mica Mist from Tonic Studios are a must-have addition to your CraftStash! Not only are they fantastic for creating backgrounds like I’ve focused on in this masterclass, but you can also use them for adding colour and shimmer to your focal images and die-cuts.

To showcase the wonderful Winter Woodland stamps with this issue of Creative Stamping, I have focused on creating backgrounds, and I’ve teamed mica mist and shimmer powder with silver heat embossing for an embossed resist feel.

Let’s talk about the shimmer powder first. Nuvo Shimmer Powder is a mixture of mica powder and dye powder, and a few of the colours even have a mix of a couple of tones within the bottle. You can tap them onto dry cardstock and add water, or tap directly onto damp cardstock, spritzed or lightly brushed with water. You can even create your own mica ‘paint’ from them and apply them to your card that way.

The mica mists are already in a solution, and after a good shake you can just spray them directly onto your project, but you can also manipulate them with a brush, or flick them on by unscrewing the lid and tapping the uptake tube over your work. The mica mists give a nice subtle effect, but to intensify the colours, you can always combine them with the powders, and to mute the powders, you can simply dilute them with more water.

Overall I think these two new additions to the Nuvo range are tremendous fun to play with, they might seem daunting and messy to begin with, but depending on how you chose to use them, you can control the messy aspect, and just create some wonderful shimmery results. You might want to start by creating an emboss-resist mica powder background by following the step by step instructions below. Then why not try some of the other projects attached.

1

Stamp a dense pattern of logs onto a 13cm-square piece of white cardstock, add silver embossing powder and heat-emboss to set. Spritz the panel with water. Tap the powder just from each bottle into little puddles of water on a glass mat, mixing some different tones together to create a deeper blue and teal colour

2

Use a paintbrush to add the colours to the background, working from the top, blending from one colour to the next

3

To add extra intensity and interest, sprinkle on more powder before the panel is dry
