Scene building tutorial

Your Scene Building Kit
This technique is so much fun to play with - and you just need a few essential tools to get you started!
Pick up the essentials from CraftStash:
- Masking paper or low tack tape
- Ink blending tool
- Your favourite ink, such as Tim Holtz Distress Ink
Building miniature scenes using masking, inking, die-cutting and stamping couldn’t be easier. Before investing in new stamps or dies, have a look through your craft stash for any small images as well as dies that could be used to build scenes such as small flowers and leaves, clouds or houses and trees.
Masking paper is essential to create inked shaped scenes such as circles or hearts. If you don’t have masking paper, use Post-it notes to create masks – these products already have a low-tack repositional adhesive applied, as well as being made of thin enough material to allow the ink to be applied right up to the edge. To die-cut scenes for masks, a high-quality masking paper such as Inkadinkado Stamping Mask Paper is worth purchasing. As an alternative to masking, die-cut a shaped window from the front of your card and create a scene behind it.
Any type of ink can be used to create backgrounds and scenes, but you'll need an ink-blending tool to apply it to create soft and seamless blends. My favourite ink to use for backgrounds and colouring die-cuts is Ranger Tim Holtz Distress Ink. It comes in an array of colours and blends seamlessly.
Many craft companies produce scenescape dies that are perfect for creating miniature scenes. Use the die-cut in its entirety or cut it apart and use elements for your scene. Die-cut the scene from white cardstock then use Post-it notes to mask the die-cut, allowing you to colour different parts using blended ink. You could also colour the die-cut using marker pens or die-cut the scene from coloured cardstock or patterned paper. However you choose to create and build your miniature scenes, you are sure to have lots of fun!
Use the largest die from the element builder die set to cut a 10.8x14cm stitched rectangle from white cardstock. Die-cut an 8.3cm circle from masking paper then attach the masking paper to the stitched rectangle. Cut a gentle curve along the bottom of a piece of masking paper then place the masking paper over the top of the circular aperture, leaving the section you want to be the lake unmasked. Apply Tumbled Glass ink
Move the mask further up the circle to cover what will be the sky. Mask the inked lake leaving the hillside exposed then apply Peeled Paint ink for the hillside. Die-cut three small clouds from masking paper and attach to the sky as shown. Mask the hill and lake leaving the sky area exposed. Apply Tumbled Glass ink for the sky then remove the masks and stamp the tree trunk and horse as shown
Mask the hillside then use Olive Grove ink to stamp trees along the horizon. Remove all masks except the initial circular aperture mask. Use the Once Upon a Time and Magical Kingdom stamp sets to create the scene then remove the mask to reveal the stamped scene
