We love working with stencils in our crafting but sometimes it can be hard to find just the right design for your project. In this step-by-step tutorial, we're going to show you how to create your own stencils using your digital die-cutting machine. This method works no matter what brand of machine you have, whether that's a Cricut, Silhouette or Brother Scan'n'Cut.

Making Stencils Using Your Digital Die-Cutting Machine

We are going to give you instructions and show you how to achieve this technique using the Brother Scan'n'Cut, but the principle is the same for other machines.

You will need Brother ScanNCut stencil material, acetate or a stencil sheet. Experiment with different materials to see what works best with your machine.

Prepare your design. You can either import an existing design, like one of our stencil downloads, or create your own. Send the files to your machine, ready to cut.

2

Add the stencil material to the machine’s mat and cut making sure not to go through the backing. Once cut, add the stencil to your card stock and ink, exactly as you would with a store-bought stencil, layering as required.

Trim the layer to size and allow to dry. Layer the stencil background onto cardstock before securing to the card front along with a coloured panel.

Stamp, colour and die-cut the images, and secure to the card front, along with your desired sentiment as shown.
