ABOUT THE JOB
The successful candidate will take on a key editorial role on Practical Publishing’s Knit Now magazine, helping to ensure it is published on time, on budget and to the highest standards. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the magazine meets or exceeds budget copy sales.
Role & Responsibilities
- Planning and commissioning magazines to a blueprint, ensuring we are offering readers the most exciting and engaging content, tailored to the readers’ needs, featuring the very best knitting brands and designers.
- Generating innovative and high-quality covermount concepts and working with the Product Development team to produce market-leading covermounts.
- Managing the copy flow of projects and features, ensuring they are laid out clearly and correctly and that they are free from errors.
- Developing contacts within the market, representing the magazine to the industry at trade and consumer events and attending at least one external visit per month
- Liaising with the Publisher and marketing team to develop and execute the long-term publishing strategy for the title
- Liaising with relevant staff in other departments or roles within the company (eg art, production, advertising, marketing) to support the production and commercial performance of the title
- Building and engaging with our digital audience through CraftWorld.com, social media, video and email channels
- Identifying trends within the market and reacting to market conditions in a timely and appropriate way
- Manage/attend photo shoots.
- Carry out any other duties as identified.
Skills & Experience
With that in mind the ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
ESSENTIAL:
- Knowledge of, and ability to meet, the needs of the reader
- A passion for knitting and yarn
- Ideas, creativity and originality
- Experience of managing complex projects to a set deadline
- Strong creative problem-solving skills
- Excellent writing skills, and ability to spot good writing and design
- Pro-active in relationship-building and ability to act as magazine’s spokesperson
- Strong numeracy skills and the ability to apply these skills to knitting patterns
- Computer literacy, particularly in the use of Microsoft Office
DESIRABLE:
- Experience of writing or editing knitting patterns
- 2+ years’ experience in an editorial or content production role
- Experience of editing and proofing in a professional setting
- Magazine production skills, gained either through formal training or experience
- Awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of competing titles in the knitting market
- Experience of managing social media channels or blogging, particularly within the craft community
Experience of working in the magazine industry would be an advantage but NOT ESSENTIAL if strong project-management skills can be demonstrated.
This job is suited to somebody who has experience of working in a fast-paced working environment, who is extremely organised with attention to detail and has strong written skills and of course has a passion for all things Knitting!
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Permanent and full time based at the Stockport office, with hybrid working available after an inital training period.
Monday - Thursday 9.00am to 5.30pm AND Friday 9.00am - 4.00pm.
Salary: £Attractive & Competitive DOE
