How to use iron-on to make a t-shirt with a layered design

In this demo, I'm showing you how to use iron-on with the Cricut maker and the Cricut EasyPress to make a cute t-shirt.

First, you will take your blue mat and place the iron-on face-down onto the mat. With iron-on it's super important to remember to place it face-down because you will be cutting into the back of the material.

Use your brayer tool to make sure it's fully stuck down.

Now load your mat into the machine, with the fine point blade ready to cut.

Upload your image to your Cricut design software and get ready to cut. Since we're cutting into the back of the material, it's super-important to remember to click the button on screen to mirror your image.

Select the foil iron-on from the settings in your software and your machine will do the rest! Just press the GO button and let your Cricut get to cutting.

Once the design is cut out, take it off the mat, pop your next colour in and get the machine going again while you weed your first layer.

First, cut away any unused sections of the vinyl so that you can use it for future designs. You don't have to use a full sheet of vinyl every time - you can always use smaller pieces and match up the position of your design with the position of the vinyl on the mat before you cut.

I love the weeding tool with a hook at the end - it looks a bit like a dentist's tool! I peel away all of the bits I don't want and then use the detaled point of the weeding tool to pick out all the fiddly bits and fine details.

Once the second layer is cut, just go in and do the same as you did before, weeding out anything you don't need and leaving behind the design on the clear backing sheet.

Now it's time to get your EasyPress out! Set the heat according to the Cricut Heat Guide.

Lay down your EasyPress mat on a solid, flat surface. Lay the t-shirt down on top of it and pre-heat your fabric to remove any moisture from your t-shirt.

Let's go in with our first layer. Position the design where you want it to go and smooth it down. The carrier sheet has a little bit of stick so it will keep itself in place.

Once you're ready and your EasyPress is up to temperature, pop it on top of your design, press the green button and give it just a little light gentle press. You don't have to press hard - the weight of the press will do the work for you. Just wait for the timer to count down and when you hear the beep, remove the EasyPress.

Pop the EasyPress back into its cradle to keep it safe.

Lift your t-shirt off away from the matt and give it a good waft to help it cool down. Once the design is cool, you can take away the backing and get ready to add the second layer.

You're going to do the same as you did before, layering the next section over the top of your design. If your second section is smaller than the first, pop the backing from your first section back on top before you apply the EasyPress, just to protect it from the heat.

To finish, turn your design over and give it a quick press on the back just to fully secure it.

And there we have it - one beautifully finished personalised design ready to wear!
