How to Crochet the Block Stitch

Step 1
Foundation chain: Chain loosely in multiples of 3 + 2 ch with your chosen main colour.
Row 1: 1 tr in 5th ch from hook (missed ch count as 1 tr), tr in each ch across. Do not turn. At the end of Row 1 you should have 1 less stitch than the original ch number. My chain was 18+2 and I now have 17 tr.
Step 2
Pull up the working loop and remove your hook. If you have a stitch marker, add it to the loop so you don’t lose it.
Step 3
Row 2: Join your contrasting colour to turning ch at beginning of previous row, 3 ch (counts as 1 dc, 2 ch), miss 3, 1 dc in sp between sts, 2 ch, miss 3, 1 dc in sp between sts; rep from across, working last st into last sp before final st. Fasten off your yarn by pulling it through the loop.
Step 4
Row 3: Remove stitch marker (if using) from loop of first colour, insert hook in loop of first colour, 3 ch (counts as a tr), turn work, 3 tr in next 2ch-sp across, 1 tr into top of ch from Row 1. Pull up the working loop, remove hook and add stitch marker if using.
Row 4: Using contrast colour, rep Row 2.
Row 5: Using main colour, rep Row 3.
Rep patt as set in rows 4-5 to desired length. Weave in ends.
