Faux Embossing Tutorial
This tutorial shows you how to use dies to create faux-embossed backgrounds for your designs
Faux Embossing is a simple but effective technique where you die-cut multiples of the same image then arrange them in a particular pattern to resemble an embossed design
The greatest aspect of this technique is that you can create the look of using an embossing folder with any die from your stash! This way instead of being left with one pattern from an embossing folder, you can arrange any of your die-cuts in whatever order, numerous times, to create loads of different designs.
When using traditional embossing folders, I often like to colour in the raised designs even though this can be rather time consuming, however with this technique simply using coloured cardstock can product the same effect.
Three-dimensional embossing folders have become quite popular recently, and you can create that look using this faux-embossing method too. Simply use dies that layer up to give two levels of ‘embossed’ impression, such as the ‘Good Luck’ card, or even overlap your die-cuts so some areas have a higher profile than others. You could even develop this idea further and emboss an overall pattern first then add die-cuts on top, this would really emulate one of those three-dimensional folders.
Remember you don’t have to use the same colour of cardstock as your background, switch it up using different colours for even more variation.
Add a little double-sided adhesive to the back of your cardstock, this will speed up the faux-embossing process as you don’t need to fiddle around using glue
Die-cut your chosen dies and try to poke the die-cuts out of the die so they stay in situ in the cardstock. This means you can die-cut lots in one session rather than having to stop to adhere and die-cut repeatedly
Peel your die-cuts out of the cardstock and adhere to your background – adding the adhesive first makes them like stickers so this process becomes really quick and easy
