Dimensional Sentiments Technique Tutorial

This technique involves stamping a sentiment to create dimension on the card. The dimension is created by die-cutting an image which overlaps the sentiment and layering the card front with 3D foam pads. Choose the desired sentiment stamp and die and place the die and stamp on a cardstock panel where you would like them to be, moving until happy with the layout. Remove the die and stamp the sentiment with a black or dark colour ink. I have used a black VersaFine ink here as this gives a clear, crisp image. Large, bold sentiments work really well as they won’t get lost in the rest of the design. Clear polymer sentiment stamps are useful for these cards as you can see where the sentiment will be when you are planning the design.

If you are using a co-ordinating stamp and die, stamp the image first so that part of the image is over the sentiment and then die-cut the image. If you are just using a die then place it over the sentiment and die-cut. After die-cutting, make sure you keep all of the pieces of card to put the card back together. Matt the die-cut panel onto coloured card, then onto the card front. Use the die-cut as a guide to place the ‘waste’ back in the correct place. Colour the die-cut and add 3D foam to the back and replace into the negative space. The sentiment now has dimension across the raised die-cut and the flat card.

The rest of the card can be minimally decorated so that the sentiment and die-cut are the focus of the card.

1

Cut a piece of watercolour card to size and place the dies and stamp where you would like them to be on the finished design

2

Move the dies off the card and stamp the sentiment in black ink so that it goes over where the die-cuts will be

3

Make sure the stamped sentiment is dry. Stamp the two flowers with Wild Honey ink so that they are both over the sentiment

4

Place the dies over the stamped flowers, hold in place with low-tack tape and die-cut

5

Stamp two leaves with Shabby Shutters ink over the edge of each negative die-cut. Use a damp brush to pull out the ink colour on the leaves and flowers

6

Blend Wild Honey ink around the edges of the panel, matt onto yellow cardstock and layer the panel onto the card front. Add 3D foam to the back of the die-cuts and place into the negative space to create the dimensional sentiment
