Deer
You will need
• Stylecraft Special DK, 100% acrylic (323yd/295m per 100g ball):
1 x 100g ball in 1064 Mocha (A)
Small amount in 1218 Parchment (B) for forehead
Small amount in 1002 Black (C) for paws, feet and nose
Small amount in 1054 Walnut (D) for antlers
• 3.5mm (UK9, USE/4) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
• Polyester stuffing
• 12mm safety eyes
The deer is 17in/43cm tall
Ears (make 2)
Using 3.5mm hook and A, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 4 dc into the centre of the ring (4 sts).
Round 2: (1 dc, dc2inc) twice (6 sts).
Round 3: (2 dc, dc2inc) twice (8 sts).
Round 4: (3 dc, dc2inc) twice (10 sts).
Round 5: (4 dc, dc2inc) twice (12 sts).
Round 6: (5 dc, dc2inc) twice (14 sts).
Round 7: (6 dc, dc2inc) twice (16 sts).
Rounds 8–12: Work 5 rounds straight.
Round 13: (6 dc, dc2tog) twice (14 sts).
Round 14: (5 dc, dc2tog) twice (12 sts).
Fasten off leaving an 8in (20cm) tail of yarn. Flatten ear.
Antlers (make 2)
Using 3.5mm hook and D, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 5 dc into the centre of the ring (5 sts).
Rounds 2–7: Work 6 rounds straight.
Fasten off leaving an 8in (20cm) tail of yarn. Put a little stuffing in each antler piece. Sew one piece halfway up the other to create an antler.
Head
Using 3.5mm hook and A, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 6 dc into the centre of the ring.
Round 2: 2 dc into each st (12 sts).
Round 3: (1 dc, dc2inc) 6 times (18 sts).
Rounds 4–5: 1 dc in each st around.
You will now work the head in Mocha (A) and in Parchment (B). When you are not crocheting a colour run the yarn through the back of the stitch and then pick up this strand of yarn when you need to change colour.
Round 6: (2 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (2 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A)
(2 dc, dc2inc) twice (24 sts).
Round 7: (3 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (3 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A)
(3 dc, dc2inc) twice (30 sts).
Round 8: (4 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (4 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A)
(4 dc, dc2inc) twice (36 sts).
Round 9: (5 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (5 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A)
(5 dc, dc2inc) twice (42 sts).
Round 10: (6 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (6 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A) (6 dc, dc2inc) twice (48 sts).
Round 11: (7 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (7 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A) (7 dc, dc2inc) twice (54 sts).
Round 12: (8 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (8 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A) (8 dc, dc2inc) twice (60 sts).
Round 13: (9 dc, dc2inc) three times, then change to Parchment (B) (9 dc, dc2inc), then change to Mocha (A) (9 dc, dc2inc) twice (66 sts).
Round 14: 33 dc, then change to Parchment (B) 11 dc, then change to Mocha (A) 22 dc (66 sts).
Round 15: 33 dc, then change to Parchment (B) 11 dc, then change to Mocha (A) 22 dc (66 sts).
Round 16: 34 dc, then change to Parchment (B) 11 dc, then change to Mocha (A) 21 dc (66 sts).
Round 17: 34 dc, then change to Parchment (B) 11 dc, then change to Mocha (A) 21 dc (66 sts).
Fasten off (B) just work in A.
Make slots for ears and antlers
Round 18: 25 dc, 3 ch, miss 3 sts, 5 dc, 2 ch, miss 2 sts, 9 dc, 2 ch, miss 2 sts, 5 dc, 3 ch, miss 3 sts, 12 dc (66 sts).
Round 19: 1 dc in each dc and each ch.
Rounds 20–21: Work 2 rounds straight.
Round 22: (9 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (60 sts).
Round 23: (8 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (54 sts).
Round 24: (7 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (48 sts).
Round 25: (6 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (42 sts).
Round 26: (5 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (36 sts).
Round 27: (4 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (30 sts).
Round 28: (3 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (24 sts).
Stop at this point. Put a safety pin on your working loop. Using the photograph as a guide, position and secure safety eyes on the head. Then place the base of the ears in each ear slot and sew on firmly. Then place the base of the antlers in slots and sew on firmly. Stuff the head firmly. Then return to finishing the decreasing, putting the working loop back on your crochet hook.
Round 29: (2 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 30: (1 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (12 sts).
Round 31: Dc2tog to end (6 sts).
Fasten off. Finish stuffing the head. Then use yarn tail to gather and secure the last 6 sts.
Using the photograph as a guide, stitch the nose using black yarn.
Arms (make 2)
Using 3.5mm hook and C, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 6 dc into the centre of the ring.
Round 2: 2 dc into each st (12 sts).
Round 3: (1 dc, dc2inc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 4: (2 dc, dc2inc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 5: Work 1 round tbl (24 sts).
Rounds 6–7: Work 2 rounds straight.
Change to A.
Rounds 8–9: Work 2 rounds straight.
Round 10: (4 dc, dc2tog) 4 times (20 sts).
Rounds 11–28: Work 18 rounds straight.
Round 29: (3 dc, dc2tog) 4 times (16 sts).
Round 30: (2 dc, dc2tog) 4 times (12 sts).
Fasten off leaving an 8in (20cm) tail of yarn. Fill each arm firmly with stuffing. Fold the top of the arm widthwise.
Feet and legs (make 2)
Using 3.5mm hook and C, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 6 dc into the centre of the ring.
Round 2: 2 dc into each st (12 sts).
Round 3: (1 dc, dc2inc) 6 times (18 sts).
Round 4: (2 dc, dc2inc) 6 times (24 sts).
Round 5: Work 1 round tbl (24 sts).
Rounds 6–7: Work 2 rounds straight.
Change to A.
Rounds 8–9: Work 2 rounds straight.
Round 10: (4 dc, dc2tog) 4 times (20 sts).
Rounds 11–32: Work 22 rounds straight.
Round 33: (3 dc, dc2tog) 4 times (16 sts).
Round 34: (2 dc, dc2tog) 4 times (12 sts).
Fasten off leaving an 8in (20cm) tail of yarn. Fill each foot and leg firmly with stuffing. Fold the top of the
leg widthwise.
Body
Using 3.5mm hook and A, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 9 dc into the centre of the ring.
Round 2: (Dc2inc, 1 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (15 sts).
Round 3: (Dc2inc, 3 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (21 sts).
Round 4: (Dc2inc, 5 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (27 sts).
Round 5: (Dc2inc, 7 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (33 sts).
Round 6: (Dc2inc, 9 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (39 sts).
Round 7: (Dc2inc, 11 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (45 sts).
Round 8: (Dc2inc, 13 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (51 sts).
Round 9: (Dc2inc, 15 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (57 sts).
Round 10: (Dc2inc, 17 dc, dc2inc) 3 times (63 sts).
Round 11: Work 1 round straight tbl (63 sts).
In the next round you will place the legs, working through the top stitches of the legs.
Round 12: 21 dc (dc through two layers of the leg and the next dc st) 6 times, 9 dc, (dc through two layers
of the leg and the next dc st) 6 times, 21 dc (63 sts).
Rounds 13–32: Work 20 rounds straight.
Round 33: (19 dc, dc2tog) 3 times (60 sts).
Round 34: (8 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (54 sts).
Round 35: (7 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (48 sts).
Round 36: (6 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (42 sts).
In the next round you will place the arms, working through the top stitches of the arms. Place and pin the arms on the side of the body.
Round 37: Dc in each st until you reach the arms, fold the first arm in half, (dc through two layers of the arm and the next dc st) 6 times, dc across the front of the body until you reach the next arm, (dc through two layers of the arm and the next dc st) 6 times, dc to end (42 sts).
Round 38: (5 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (36 sts).
Round 39: (4 dc, dc2tog) 6 times (30 sts).
Fasten off leaving an 8in (20cm) tail of yarn. Using a tapestry needle, weave this yarn through the last dc sts of the round and gather the hole together slightly to create a 4in (10cm) diameter neck edge. Firmly stuff the body. Sew the head firmly to the top of the body.
Tail
Using 3.5mm hook and B, make a magic ring.
Round 1: 1 ch, 4 dc into the centre of the ring (4 sts).
Round 2: (1 dc, dc2inc) twice (6 sts).
Round 3: (2 dc, dc2inc) twice (8 sts).
Rounds 4–8: Work 5 rounds straight.
Change to A.
Round 9: (3 dc, dc2inc) twice (10 sts).
Round 10: 2 dc, 6 htr, 2 dc (10 sts).
Rounds 11–12: 1 dc, 6 htr, 3 dc (10 sts).
Round 13: Work 1 round straight.
Fasten off leaving an 8in (20cm) tail of yarn. Fill tail with stuffing. Fold the top of the tail widthwise. Sew firmly to the back of the deer.
T-shirt
You will need
• Stylecraft Special DK, 100% acrylic (323yd/295m per 100g ball):
Approximately 50g in 1246 Lipstick (A)
Small amount in 1005 Cream (B)
• 3.5mm (UK9, USE/4) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
Front and back
Using 3.5mm hook and yarn B, ch 27.
Row 1 (RS): Fasten off B, join with A,
1 ch, 1 dc at base of ch, 1 dc in each ch to end, turn (27 sts).
Rows 2–20: Work 19 rows straight.
Row 21: Sl st in each of next 3 sts, (sl st, 1 ch, 1 dc) in next st, 1 dc in each of next 20 sts, turn leaving last 3 sts unworked (21 sts).
Row 22: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to end, turn.
Row 23: 1 ch, miss 1 st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, miss 1 st, 1 dc in last st, turn (19 sts).
Row 24: 1 ch, 1 dc in each st to end, turn.
Row 25: 1 ch, miss 1 st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, miss 1 st, 1 dc in last st, turn (17 sts).
Rows 26–29: Work 4 rows straight.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sleeves (make 2)
Using 3.5mm hook and yarn B, ch 25.
Row 1 (RS): Fasten off B, join with A, 1 ch, 1 dc at base of ch, 1 dc in each ch to end, turn (25 sts).
Rows 2–4: Work 3 rows straight (25 sts).
Row 5: Sl st in each of next 3 sts, (sl st, 1 ch, 1 dc) in next st, 1 dc in each of next 18 sts, turn leaving last 3 sts unworked (19 sts).
Row 6: 1 ch, miss 1 st, 1 dc in each st to last 2 sts, miss 1 st, 1 dc in last st, turn (17 sts).
Rows 7–12: As row 6 (decreasing 1 st at each end of row, turn (5 sts).
Finishing
Sew the raglan sleeve seams to the front and back. Sew the side seams of the front and back together, then sew the sleeve seams on each side. Keep the neck opening as wide as possible. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Shorts
You will need
• Stylecraft Special DK, 100% acrylic (323yd/295m per 100g ball):
Approximately 50g in 1005 Cream
• 3.5mm (UK9, USE/4) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
Using 3.5mm hook ch 28 sts, join with a sl st to make a loop. Work in continuous rounds.
First leg
Round 1: 1 ch, 1 dc in every ch (28 sts).
Rounds 2–8: Work 7 rounds straight. Fasten off.
Second leg
Make a second leg exactly the same but do not fasten off.
Round 9: Join second leg by working 3 ch, place maker in last ch, then work 1 dc across the 28 sts of first leg, 1 dc in each of 3 ch, 1 dc in the 28 sts of the second leg, 1 dc in each of opposite side of 3 ch (62 sts).
Round 10: 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, * (9 dc, dc2inc) six times (68 sts).
Rounds 11–14: Work 4 rounds straight.
You will now create the bottom of the trousers by working forwards and backward in rows. This is called short-row shaping.
Row 1: 37 dc, turn.
Row 2: (WS) 1 ch, 9 dc, turn (9 sts).
Row 3: (RS) 1 ch, 9 dc, 1 dc from round 14, turn (10 sts).
Row 4: (WS) 1 ch, 10 dc, 1 dc from row 1, turn (11 sts).
Row 5: (RS) 1 ch, 11 dc, 1 dc from round 14, turn (12 sts).
Continue to work forwards and backwards in rows, picking up another stitch from round 14 and row 1 alternately until you have 23 sts with WS facing, turn. Now work hole for tail.
Row 17: 1 ch, 9 dc, 5 ch, miss 5 sts, 9 dc, 1 dc from round 14, turn (24 sts).
Row 18: 1 ch, 10 dc, 1 dc in each ch, 9 dc, 1 dc from row 1, turn (25 sts).
Row 19: (RS) 1 ch, 25 dc, do not turn but continue to work round the rest of round 14, 21 dc. You will have now created the seat of the trousers (68 sts).
Round 15: Work 1 round straight.
Round 16: 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (9 dc, dc2tog) six times (62 sts).
Round 17: Work 1 round straight.
Round 18: 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, (8 dc, dc2tog) six times (56 sts).
Rounds 19–22: Work 4 rounds straight.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Tie
Using 3.5mm hook and B, ch 90. Fasten off and tie a knot in each end.
Using a tapestry needle, weave the tie between the rounds 20 and 21 using small running stitches. Tie with a bow at the top to the shorts.
Rainbow scarf
You will need
• Stylecraft Special DK, 100% acrylic (323yd/295m per 100g ball): Small amount in 1246 Lipstick (A), 1711 Spice (B), 1823 Mustard (C), 1852 Apple (D) and 1854 French Navy (E)
• 3.5mm (UK9, USE/4) crochet hook
• Tapestry needle
Using 3.5mm hook and A ch 91 sts.
Row 1: 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc to end, turn (90 sts).
Rows 2–3: 1 ch, dc to end, turn (90 sts).
Change to yarn B.
Rows 4–5: Work 2 rows straight, turn (90 sts).
Change to yarn C.
Rows 6–7: Work 2 rows straight, turn (90 sts).
Change to yarn D.
Rows 8–9: Work 2 rows straight, turn (90 sts).
Change to yarn E.
Rows 10–11: Work 2 rows straight, turn (90 sts).
Fasten off and weave in ends. At both ends, make two tassels (see page 122) to match the colour of each row, each end of the scarf should have ten tassels.
