Sometimes you just don’t have the right coloured cardstock to do the job, do you? Other times you want to have something a little different than just a single hue for your card blank colour. Well, it’s time to get out your inks, pens and pencils and colour your own card blanks!

Colouring your own card blanks can be a quick, cost-effective way to make interesting and colourful cards without having to invest money into a whole range of patterned papers, different coloured cardstocks and even stamps. You can use lots of different materials to colour your card blanks so, even if you only have a set of colouring pencils or one inkpad, you can still make your own.

For my DIY coloured card blanks I’ve used five different techniques: three with inkpads, one with marker pens and one with coloured pencils. But you don’t need to stop there – you can use any of the other types of colouring materials you have in your stash. Just have a play and see what effects you like and what you can achieve with your stash.

Try different cardstock as well, because different textures will give you some fun effects with some of the materials. Heavyweight cardstock is best for this technique although you can get away with a lighter weight for some of the drier techniques.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match your colours to make bespoke card blanks that you would not be able to buy anyway! Play with patterns and shapes to add even more interest to your card making. You can then use your card blanks as you would any other card blank and matt and layer your card designs to match the colour of the background.

So don’t have that red card blank you need? Don’t worry – make your own!

1

Press the Distress Oxides firmly onto a piece of plastic or a craft mat until you have a good amount of ink. Alternatively use a drop or two of re-inker

2

Pick up the ink using a large wet brush and swipe it over the cardstock surface. Repeat as needed

3

Leave the cardstock to dry completely then fold it into the desired card blank. Place it under something heavy overnight if needed
