Deer stamp step-by-step

How to…colour the deer
- Use an ink that works with the colouring medium used, such as alcohol markers, with Memento an alcohol friendly ink.
- Add a quick base of the lightest colour, it doesn't have to be perfect as it will have colour built upon it as you go.
- Then move to the darkest shade to add shadows. Decide on the sunlight direction, from there add shadows, extending it a little so there is colour to blend out.
- Use the medium shade to blend out the darker colour. Also colour in any other areas where the medium will blend into the light.
- Use the lightest colour to blend to medium and smooth the whole dark to light. The lightest colour is where the sun is hitting the deer.
- If some of the depth has been lost to the shadows when blending, go back in with the darkest colour, just enough to re-stablish the shadow.
- Add finishing touches by colouring in the areas with a pink and adding a bit of blush to the cheeks, add white gel pen highlights.
Top tip
Depending on how much light you want to be hitting the deer will determine how light this colour is. If you want areas where the sun is super bright, then try adding in another shade to the blend.
Poinsettia step-by-step

How to…colour the poinsettia
- For an overlapping image, add two colours giving more depth in the shadows and the central areas. Start with the lightest colour for the base.
- Next move onto the darkest shade. Add a line of colour around the centres, as that is lower than the middle of the petals. Also add to the shadow areas of the petals.
- Using a shade lighter blend out the darker colour. For the top petals, add colour to the tip and for the bottom, pull the colour out a little further.
- Make sure there is enough space for all colours in the blend, if there isn't either pull the colour back or miss a pen. Blend the next lighter colour and the colour before.
- Finish by using the lightest colour, and blending adding highlights where the sun would hit it.
- For the underneath, add the darkest colour for shadows. Go around the centre, lower petals and the leaves where they overlap. Repeat previous steps for shadows and highlights.
- Add green using the steps above. Blend the shadows where the petals overlap and up the centre of the leaves and blend out to the edges.
