Abstract from Georgia Farrell for Rowan

Georgia says:

Abstract is about architecture, as an aesthetic or a visual language, rather than just as a source of inspiration for my design process.

Abstract is all about reinterpreting my inspiration rather than just simply translating it and in doing so, celebrating my personal creative process.

Abstract was created during lockdown and was the project that kept me going, it pushed me to work in way’s I wasn’t used to and challenged me to be even more creative with what I had to work with.

Abstract has a collage like aesthetic, layering blocks of colour and texture, adding structural lines and features. In the same way, I’ve layered up texture within intarsia, there’s travelling cables that cross texture and colour blocks, and there’s surface embroidery on top of travelling cables. There are also collage style elements to the garment shapes too with asymmetric hems and mismatching applied trims.

The colour palette runs across two yarns; Rowan Felted Tweed and Rowan Kidsilk Haze. The designs use the two yarns in a number of ways, sometimes separately, sometimes held together, and sometimes garments feature a bit of both. There’s also surface embroidery in the contrasting yarn to bring a different dimension to the garments.
