What are Oxford Bags?

Whether you call them trousers or pants, one thing is for sure - Oxford Bags make a statement! The key elements of this style is the high waist and wide leg. The original versions usually had a button fly, solid waistband and deep pockets. Originally popularised by the trendy students of Oxford in the 1920s, Oxford Bags saw a resurgance in popularity in the Northern Soul movement of the 1970s. It's easy to see how this style influenced other popular trends of the 20th century too, from Zoot Suits to hippie flares!

How do I sew Oxford Bags?

This style is fun and relatively forgiving to sew. You need to get a good fit in the waist, but the flowy style of the trouser leg means that fitting is a breeze! Katherine Wide-Leg Trousers

Inspired by movie icon Katherine Hepburn, these vintage style trousers are easy to sew and to wear. This PDF pattern includes UK high street sizes 8-18.

These trousers are fitted at the waist and hips and flare out to a wide leg. They feature a fly front, button closure and pockets. The pattern comes in sizes to fit 24" to 45.5" waist, which is about a UK dress size 6-18.


Sara Pleated Pants

It would be easy to adapt these stylish pleated trousers into Oxford Bags by simply adding more width to the leg. This printable PDF pattern includes UK sizes 6-22. The instructions for the fly front zipper are easy to follow if you've never sewn this style before.
